Shey Sculpture
A new community member has recently found her home in Lyons. Weighing in at nearly 5 tons, a sculpture named “Shey” has landed in Bohn Park and has been immediately enjoyed by local families, active seniors and daily visitors to town. Shey is a large Lion carved from pink sandstone originating from a quarry near Lyons by accomplished Colorado sculptor Kimmerjae Macarus of Lafayette. She is a permanent gift donated by a generous benefactor, Greg Fitzgerald. Both Kimmer and Greg had special connections to Lyons and an affinity for our artsy community and felt that a public park in Lyons was where Shey belonged.
Kimmer, the creator of Shey says “Lyons has always come up first for me in imagining happiest places where Shey might land. The material is sandstone from the region around Lyons, and she is a Lion-like creature. Bringing her near to where she came out of the Earth is compelling, as this helps connect people to aspects of a unique place”. It took over six years of work from a large unfinished “mother stone” to its current form, a lounging, majestic being inviting kids to play on, adults to sit and contemplate, and even senior exercise class to perform their pushups against her sides.
With a lot of logistical navigation with public works and town staff, a large crane finally lifted her into Bohn Park in mid-August 2025. The Board of Trustees officially accepted Shey as a legacy donation and permanent art fixture for Lyons. The town is grateful for Kimmer’s vision and the extremely generous financial support from Mr. Fitzgerald that allowed Shey to land here.
